What the tooling fee actually pays for
Fully custom-shaped metal medals need production equipment that follows the approved artwork. Casting or striking can require specific tooling for the outline and relief; the right process depends on size, thickness, cut-outs and how fine the design is. Laser engraving a stock blank is not the same order as casting a custom profile.
Confirm the exact production method rather than assuming every factory’s word “mold” refers to an identical item. Ask whether the fee covers the front, back, side detail and any special cut-out construction.
What changes a custom medal mold fee?
| Cost factor | Why it matters | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Forming method | Die casting, die striking and stock-blank engraving require different production setups. | The named process and whether the quote is for a fully custom shape. |
| Size, thickness and relief | Larger, thicker or sculpted pieces can require more complex tooling. | Finished dimensions plus 2D, 3D or mixed relief. |
| Front, back and cut-outs | Two-sided detail, open areas and special edges may change tool construction. | Every side and feature included in the approved proof. |
| Artwork revisions | A change after tooling starts can require rework or replacement. | Which proof corrections are included and when tooling begins. |
A useful quotation separates one-time tooling from the per-piece price, sample charges, packaging and freight. That makes first orders and later reorders easier to compare.
Why the unit price changes between 100 and 1,000 pieces
The artwork review and tooling work can occur before any finished medals exist. When that setup is allocated across only 100 medals, its impact per finished medal is proportionally larger. At 500 or 1,000 identical pieces, setup costs may be shared over more usable items and the production run may be more efficient.
That does not mean “always order more.” Event-dated medals can become unusable after the finish line. Compare total spending against your realistic participant count, rather than buying unnecessary stock to reach a better unit-price tier.
Five questions to ask a factory about its mold
- What process? Die-cast, die-struck or a different construction? Does the quote use the design I approved?
- What is included? Mold, digital proof, any sample, and possible correction rounds?
- What triggers new tooling? Does changing the year, sponsor, size, medal shape or reverse side require a new mold?
- Can it be reused? Ask the supplier to confirm the reorder conditions, maintenance and retention period in writing.
- Who controls the approved artwork? Keep the final files, plating reference, ribbon print file and written specification accessible to your team.
Do not assume a mold is your property or that the manufacturer must store it indefinitely; those are commercial terms to confirm.
Where a Dongguan factory can offer value
When design review, metal forming, plating, color application and assembly are coordinated through a factory-based team, a buyer can compare technical alternatives before committing to tooling. For example, simplifying a tiny cut-out or choosing a more legible 2D relief may reduce rework without compromising the event identity.
Factory-direct coordination is especially relevant for repeat race series, club awards and distributors who buy a familiar shape in different finish combinations. But any price advantage must be checked in a written China-versus-local landed-cost comparison.
How to prepare a repeat order with fewer surprises
Keep a single approved specification: vector artwork, exact medal size, thickness, finish, color references, attachment type, ribbon width and print file, packaging, carton labels and previous sample photos. Before a reorder, ask your manufacturer to inspect existing tooling and confirm whether the new year or sponsor changes the artwork.
Our wholesale medal ordering page explains how distributors can retain stable product specifications. For a new project, send one RFQ to each manufacturer to make costs comparable.
Custom medal mold fee FAQ
How much does a custom medal mold cost?
There is no reliable universal price because tooling depends on the forming method, dimensions, relief, number of detailed sides, cut-outs and revision scope. Request a written quotation that separates tooling from unit price, sample charges, packing and freight.
Do I pay the mold fee again on a reorder?
Not always. Existing tooling may be reusable when the metal design and construction are unchanged, the supplier still retains the tool and it remains serviceable. Confirm reuse and any maintenance or storage terms before ordering.
Does changing the year or wording require a new mold?
It can. A date or wording formed in the metal may require changed tooling, while information added by printing, engraving, ribbon or packaging may follow a different process. Ask the factory to identify which layer changes.
Who owns the custom medal mold?
Ownership is a commercial term, not something to assume. Confirm in writing who controls the tooling, whether it can be transferred and what happens after the supplier's retention period.
How long will a factory keep the mold?
Retention periods vary by supplier and tool condition. Ask for the storage policy and have the factory inspect the tool before a time-sensitive repeat order.
Does a changed ribbon need a new metal mold?
Usually not, because ribbon artwork and metal tooling are separate components, but the manufacturer must confirm the actual production plan.

A first-time custom enamel-pin buyer asked how the mold process works and how to choose a manufacturer. Pins and medals are different products, but both illustrate why metal-tooling scope and reorder terms should be written down before payment. Read the custom metal merchandise mold question on Reddit.
